To celebrate the release of Rich Haridy's new non-fiction book Trip Reports, the APS is co-hosting a launch at the Theatre Royal. The event will feature a Q&A with the author, alongside a rare screening of Martin Scorsese's yuppie nightmare comedy, After Hours (1985).

6:30pm: Book launch + Q&A
Investigative journalist Rich Haridy spent two years diving into the world of psychedelic science and medicine in Australia. The result, his first book Trip Reports, begins by taking the reader all the way back to 1960s Melbourne when LSD was regularly prescribed by psychiatrists before shooting forward to the present day where we find microdosing, MDMA therapy, and magic mushroom genetics under the research microscope.

Join us before the movie for an exclusive, and likely provocative, conversation with Haridy, hosted by APS committee member and Associate Professor at the National Drug Research Institute, Monica Barratt.

7:45pm: After Hours (1985)
Desperate to escape his mind-numbing routine, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks, a distressed waitress, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic, Martin Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Catherine O’Hara, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace.

Trip Reports will be available for sale at the venue and the author will be present for signings before and after the screening.

The Psychedelic Supper Club, extends an open invitation to people keen on connecting with like-minded peers to delve into the realm of Psychedelic Medicine. The event is organised and hosted by Voytek Bereza, a prescribing pharmacist specialising in neuropsychopharmacology.

This event will take place at a secret location near Helensburgh. We will be serving:

• Appetizer: Hummus, baba ganush, whipped feta, olives and warm pita.

• Main: Slow-roasted lamb shoulder.

• Side: Lemon potatoes, greek salad, charred vegetables.

• Dessert: Baklava with vanilla ice cream.

All allergies and nutritional requirements are catered for apart from alcoholic drinks, which can be brought along.

• Car - parking near the venue is available (50 minutes drive from Sydney Central).

Please note, no psychedelics will be consumed during the event, however, attendees will be given a chance to try a legal stroboscopic system, the evening will have the element of the sacred with Kava ceremony for all who wish to participate and expressions of interest for a smaller number to participate in a drumming journey. We’ll be gathering in the beer garden of the Peppertree (Essendon) at 1pm, 15th August for a casual meetup where you can meet like-minded folks, make new connections and enjoy the afternoon together.

An 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s; largely monosyllabic, incontinent, dysphagic, and profoundly disengaged: received a single, high-dose intervention of psilocybin mushrooms. What followed challenges our entire understanding of neurodegenerative decline. Published recently in Frontiers in Neuroscience, this case report details a rapid, multi-domain functional reversal from a single five-gram dose. Let's look at the data.

Hope or Hype?

Psychedelic have show theoretical and practical promise in elderly care however, despite a renaissance in psychedelic research, adults over 65 make up just 1.4% of participants in modern clinical trials, a striking gap given that late-life depression, existential distress at end of life, and neurodegenerative disease are among the conditions for which psychedelic-assisted therapies are most often proposed. This lecture examines what the current evidence actually supports, where it falls silent, and what clinicians and researchers should be asking next.

This lecture, performed by Voytek Bereza a Prescribing Pharmacist from the UK will survey the emerging data across three clinical domains: treatment-resistant depression in older adults, existential distress in palliative care (the most mature evidence base, building on the psilocybin-for-cancer-anxiety trials), and the largely preclinical case for psychedelics in Alzheimer's and dementia, where neuroplasticity and neuroinflammation provide a mechanistic rationale but human data remain anecdotal. Safety considerations specific to ageing populations — cardiovascular reactivity, polypharmacy, fall risk, and cognitive vulnerability, will be discussed alongside encouraging early signals, including phase 1 data on repeated low-dose LSD in healthy older volunteers.
