APS Goldfields: Ballarat Meetup

APS Goldfields returns to Ballarat!

Come along to meet or catch up with likeminded folks, and chat about all things psychedelics: news, research, harm reduction, policy, therapy, ethnobotany, culture, etc. We do our best to hold a welcoming and non-judgemental space for people with questions or experiences they'd like to share.

And because the question always gets asked, let's answer it upfront: our events are for discussing and learning about psychedelics, as opposed to taking them!

Check out Freight Bar’s menu. Drinks, lunch and snacks will be available for purchase at the bar.

*** If you'd like to join us, please RSVP: either mark yourself as 'Going' on the Facebook event, or email: vic-goldfields@psychedelicsociety.org.au ***

Hope to see you there!

Sydney: Psychedelics and Ageing Lecture

Sydney: Psychedelics and Ageing Lecture

An 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s; largely monosyllabic, incontinent, dysphagic, and profoundly disengaged: received a single, high-dose intervention of psilocybin mushrooms. What followed challenges our entire understanding of neurodegenerative decline. Published recently in Frontiers in Neuroscience, this case report details a rapid, multi-domain functional reversal from a single five-gram dose. Let's look at the data.

Hope or Hype?

Psychedelic have show theoretical and practical promise in elderly care however, despite a renaissance in psychedelic research, adults over 65 make up just 1.4% of participants in modern clinical trials, a striking gap given that late-life depression, existential distress at end of life, and neurodegenerative disease are among the conditions for which psychedelic-assisted therapies are most often proposed. This lecture examines what the current evidence actually supports, where it falls silent, and what clinicians and researchers should be asking next.

This lecture, performed by Voytek Bereza a Prescribing Pharmacist from the UK will survey the emerging data across three clinical domains: treatment-resistant depression in older adults, existential distress in palliative care (the most mature evidence base, building on the psilocybin-for-cancer-anxiety trials), and the largely preclinical case for psychedelics in Alzheimer's and dementia, where neuroplasticity and neuroinflammation provide a mechanistic rationale but human data remain anecdotal. Safety considerations specific to ageing populations — cardiovascular reactivity, polypharmacy, fall risk, and cognitive vulnerability, will be discussed alongside encouraging early signals, including phase 1 data on repeated low-dose LSD in healthy older volunteers.

All proceeds from Ticket sales will be donated to Protecting the Cloud Forest of Los Cedros, through The Rainforest Information Centre.

Sydney: Psychedelic Date Night

Sydney: Psychedelic Date Night

Join the movement against the superficial swipe culture of dating apps. Say goodbye to stale, one-dimensional interactions and hello to a new way of connecting deeply and authentically. Whether you walk away with a future business partner, a best friend, or the love of your life, the point is the same: real chemistry doesn't happen in a swipe.

Psychedelic Date Night is an event hosted by the Australian Psychedelic Society. A "drug free event", well, mostly (coffee, booze, and cigarettes still welcome).

Forget the small talk. Our conversation prompts are designed to skip past the weather and go straight to what actually makes people interesting: curiosity, perspective, authenticity and connection. Real conversations, no algorithms required.

Event Details

📍 The Lansdowne Hotel, Sydney

📅 25th July

🎙 MC'd by Jay Katz aka Jaimie Leonarder

Format

Beyond the speed-dating rounds themselves, we're throwing in a couple of left-field icebreakers to take the pressure off and let people be a bit weird in public, a stroboscopic session and a round of ping pong included. No pickup lines required.

This event runs as a series of one-on-one speed-dating rounds, where our platform finds your best matches for each round of mini-dates. We'd are also aiming to host a dedicated LGBTQIA+ Psychedelic Date Night in future, if that's something you'd be interested in, let us know via our contact page and we'll prioritise it based on demand.

Keep the Conversation Going

In the event you don't get to finish that conversation about consciousness, ego dissolution, or your favourite famous psychonaut? Join us at our next Psychedelic Supper; a relaxed evening of community, food, and deeper conversation. More details on our events page.

The Fine Print

  • The venue reserves the right to refuse entry on the basis of intoxication or other relevant conduct policies.

  • We reserve the right to cancel and refund your ticket if needed to maintain balanced numbers (gender and age groups) for the speed-dating format, or in exceptional circumstances.

  • No refunds for cancellations made with less than 72 hours' notice from the event start time.

  • By registering, you agree to the Psychedelic Speed Dating Terms and Conditions.

Spaces are limited and filled first-come, first-served, so don't sit on this one. If you have any questions, reach out via our contact page, we're happy to help. Get tickets here.

Sydney: Expanded States Breathwork

This breathwork event uses the power of breath & somatics for entering expanded state to heal the mind, body & nervous system

Psychegetics & The Australian Psychedelic Society (APS) brings you:

Expanded States Breathwork - A Somatic Reset which combines powerful therapeutic techniques, Biodynamic Breathwork, Conscious Connected Breathwork and Bioenergetic Therapy. Connecting the inhale with the exhale, using the elements of movement, sound, touch, emotional expression, and meditation. It can be an activating practice, where we stimulate the nervous system in a safe and intentional way.

Common experiences & benefits:

  • Enter expanded flow states

  • Optimise your breathing

  • Enhance creativity & find clarity

  • Increase happiness and find centredness

  • Increase mental and physical performance

  • Release bodily tension and integrate repressed emotions

  • Unravel subconscious patterns and beliefs

  • Build resilience within the nervous system

This breathwork event helps quiet the prefrontal cortex, known as the monkey mind, so those who have struggled with meditation in the past have found this to change their experience. This breathwork allows us to build charge (or energy) within the body to access expanded states of consciousness, which allows to deeply heal and release things stuck in the mind, body and nervous system. It allows us to bypass the logical mind and go deep within, to see ourselves clearly and to feel what needs to be healed.

Pete Volos facilitates this event and holds a safe and nurturing place where breathers can partake in a unique journey. Whether you are new to breathwork, interested in expanded states or a regular practitioner, come and explore these simple, yet potent healing modalities to help let go of traumas, limiting beliefs, patterns and bodily tension/armouring, that which is weighing you down, holding you back or keeping you stuck, so you can expand your purpose, creativity and create space for what you truly desire and wish to call in.

In this session, you can expect:

  • A grounding breathwork practice to connect with your body and prepare your nervous system.

  • Setting intentions

  • Introduction to the breathwork session

  • Breathwork music & sound journey

  • Integration

  • We advise soft, comfortable clothing allowing freedom around the stomach, ribs, and chest. We recommend avoiding consuming a large meal 1.5-2 hours before the session.

  • Yoga mats are provided

Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna: Talk & Launch by Graham St John

Sydney APS is proud to present Graham St John, who will be offering an enthralling presentation on his inaugural biography: Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna. For those who missed EGA, this is your chance to hear about this incredible and monumental work, buy a book and get it signed!

Note: This event has been rescheduled for Sunday 18 January. Ticket purchase will be carried over unless a refund is requested.

OVERVIEW: Graham St John discusses his new book, already in its second pressing, Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna (with a foreword by Erik Davis, MIT Press, Oct 2025). As one of the most celebrated and yet least understood figures of the late twentieth century, Terence McKenna (1946-2000) was the 20th century’s psychedelic renaissance man. Perfecting his rugged philosophy on the role of psychedelics in evolution, consciousness, and time, McKenna was a riotous provocateur who charted the edges of mind and matter with razor wit and poetic charm. As the first serious biography of McKenna, described by Dennis McKenna as “the definitive biography of Terence,” Strange Attractor chronicles a stand-up philosopher, rogue scholar, and surreal oracle. Over the course of his career, McKenna evolved many personas and identifications, from freak and outlaw, to exile and shaman, and from prophet and trickster, to gnostic and surrealist. Drawing on extensive research, this presentation explores the many faces of a figure who forged a strange career and an impossible legacy. Books will be sold and signed by the author, so don’t miss your chance ($65.00 - cash only) [RRP = $75]

REVIEWS:

“An account as weird, wild, and nontraditional as its subject” - Publishers Weekly

“Due to St John’s intellectual reach, the book has, like a dark planet, drawn an entire menagerie of late 20th-century weirdness into its oblique orbit.” - LA Review of Books

Strange Attractor will rightfully take its place in the psychedelic canon as an accomplished work of biography, evincing deep research and a sympathetic, though not uncritical, approach to McKenna’s life and work.”- Ben Brooker, The Monthly

"Graham St John is our best contemporary historian of psychedelic culture. This biography is filled with wonders, striking the perfect balance between historical accuracy and sympathetic engagement". - Wouter J. Hanegraaff, Professor of History of Hermetic Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam

"This enrapturing book is psychoactive in all the best ways. You don’t know Terence McKenna until you’ve read Strange Attractor". - R. U. Sirius, cofounder of Mondo 2000

BIO: Graham St John, PhD, is an anthropologist and historian specialising in the study of transformational events, movements, and figures. The latest among his ten books is Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna (MIT Press, 2025), a biography of the life, work, and legacy of one of the most celebrated and yet least understood figures in intellectual history. Other titles include: Mystery School in Hyperspace: A Cultural History of DMT, and FreeNRG: Notes from the Edge of the Dancefloor. Graham is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts at the University of Huddersfield, UK. His website is: www.edgecentral.net

APS-Adelaide Monthly Integration Circle (November)

The Australian Psychedelic Society Adelaide chapter invites you to attend our new and now monthly Adelaide Psychedelic Integration Circles.

We foster a safe, non-judgemental and confidential environment for anyone seeking to integrate a past experience and share elements and insights in a way that supports integration. We will support you to make sense of challenging experiences, to share a meaningful experience with like-minded people, and to connect with the local community.

We acknowledge that recreational use of psychedelics continues despite a long history of criminalisation. The group does not encourage or condone recreational use, we do provide harm reduction practices and support.

The circle will allow for each of you to share a little about yourself and your experience, while we will also focus on learning tools and techniques to work through experiences in a structured way, guiding you through a process of reflection and action.

APS-Spring Picnic-Northern Beaches

The Sydney Chapter of the Australian Psychedelic Society warmly invites everyone to our Spring Picnic on the Northern Beaches. Head to the grass surrounding the Dee Why Beach car park and look for the APS flag in the ground a/o our banner and you’ll also see our volunteers with purple APS t-shirts on.

We'll be having a fire to gather around and after lunch for those interested, we will go for a walk. This location is also the beginning of the Dee Why to Long Reef walk that leads northward through the dunes and amazing birdlife, to the spectacular headland of the Long Reef Aquatic Reserve.

APS-Goldfields Psychedelic Stories

Join the Australian Psychedelic Society's Goldfields group for our first psychedelic stories event.

We hope to create a welcoming, safe, and non-judgemental space in which to share experiences, insights, and cautionary tales with fellow travellers. If you'd prefer to share stories you've heard or read about, that's fine too. And there will be no pressure to share - feel free to just listen, laugh, cry, or pose a question.

We'll start with lunch/drinks at The Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine (we've booked a private room for the event). Then if the weather's fine, we might head across the road for a walk around the botanical gardens.

If you'd like to attend, you can either mark yourself as 'going' on the Facebook event, or email stu.h@psychedelicsociety.org.au

Hope to see you there!
